The Urban Canopy is pioneering the local food cycle to create a more sustainable and equitable food system in Chicago. They are growers, distributors, composters and community members who seek to positively impact our city’s environment, people’s health, and local economy. They strive to make healthy produce accessible to all, reduce the miles fresh food travels, keep food waste out of landfills, and create and maintain local jobs.
To achieve this, they structure our business into seven Branches: Compost Club, Indoor Farm, Outdoor Farm, Local Unified CSA (LUCSA), Farmers Markets, non-local Distribution and Processing. These branches each work in their own way to change the way our food is grown, distributed, and wasted.
The Portage Park farmers markets sets up in Portage Park every other Sunday 10 AM-2 PM, and require that all produce is grown within a 150 mile radius.
LUC has a biodiesel labratory, bike-sharing program and farmers market.
A farmers market that sells local honey, baked goods, vegetables, and herbs.
QCDC works with the four South side communities of: North Kenwood, Oakland, portions of Douglas, and Grand Boulevard. QCDC brings residents, organizations,business,and institutions together to create a sustainable, healthy, mixed income neighborhood.
JPNA is a non-profit community organization of local residents. Our mission is to promote a thriving, family-oriented atmosphere in Jefferson Park, located on Chicago’s far northwest side.
The BCM is located in the heart of Bronzeville on a pleasant grassy lot on Cottage Grove Ave in between 44th and 45th streets. This market is operated by a local non-profit, Quad Communities Development Corporation.
